"Discovering Nature Through Sign Language"
In celebration of International Day of Persons with Disabilities observed on December
3rd, the Sign Language Class at Esa Unggul University took the initiative to organize an outdoor
learning activity with the theme "Discovering Nature Through Sign Language." This activity
aimed to invite both Deaf and hearing students to learn together in an open natural setting,
directly acquire nature-related vocabulary, and strengthen inclusive interaction among
participants.
The Sign Language Class at Esa Unggul University was officially established on July 5th,
2025, and has continued to demonstrate remarkable progress in terms of curriculum content,
participant numbers, and learning creativity. The university's commitment is further demonstrated
through the establishment of the Disability Service Unit (ULD) as a concrete manifestation of Esa
Unggul's dedication to becoming an inclusive campus. Through this outdoor activity, the spirit of
togetherness and inclusive values are expected to become more deeply rooted within the campus
environment. This activity also serves as an expressive space for Deaf students to interact directly
with nature and share sign language knowledge with their hearing peers.
The event took place on Sunday, November 16th, 2025, at the Cidahu Pine Forest, Javana
Spa, West Java. Sr. Prima Tarsisisa Owa Dede as one of the student of Esa Unggul University,
She joined this event. This is a valuable opportunity for Sr. Tarsi to help her relate and
communicate with deaf people both on and off campus and can be applied in her mission as
FMM.
Its objectives were to introduce Indonesian Sign Language (Bisindo) vocabulary with a
nature theme in a contextual and interactive manner, foster a spirit of togetherness among Deaf
students, hearing students, and lecturers, cultivate environmental awareness, reinforce inclusive
values on campus, and promote the sustainability of the Sign Language Class program as an icon
of Esa Unggul University's inclusive campus identity.
The activity proceeded exceptionally well, with participation and enthusiasm from all
attendees conveying positive messages and leaving lasting impressions. The theme "Discovering
Nature Through Sign Language" was chosen to emphasize the importance of harmony among
humanity, language, and nature. Through sign language, participants were invited to understand
the beauty and diversity of nature while embracing the meaning of inclusivity in the context of
learning beyond the classroom walls.
This Sign Language Outdoor Class activity is expected to serve as a pivotal moment in
strengthening the spirit of inclusivity at Esa Unggul University. Through nature-based learning,
Deaf and hearing students can mutually understand, appreciate, and learn together without
communication barriers. This activity can also be applied in the FMM ministry, for example in
schools such as Regina Pacis School in Bogor and Jakarta.
